The Frame Relay 10-bit-wide link-local virtual circuit identifier is a data link communication identifier (DLCI) used to allocate frames to a particular PVC or SVC. Frame Relay networks use DLCIs to multiplex the frames statistically. Each switch is preloaded with DLCIs and serves as road signs to the moving structures.
The norm permits 1024 DLCIs to exist. DLCI 0 is reserved for the ANSI / q993a LMI standard. For end-user equipment, only numbers 16 to 976 are available. For Cisco LMI, DLCI 1023 is dedicated, but numbers 16 to 1007 are available. In brief, for end-user machines, numbers from 16 to 1007 are usable while using Cisco LMI. The remainder is used for different purposes of administration. Layer 2 Addresses that are locally important are DLCI. No two systems have the same DLCI in a single frame relay cloud mapped to its interface.
